Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I see the editor?
After launching, click the menu-bar icon and choose “Open Editor.” The app has no Dock icon, and launching it alone does not show the editor.
Why won’t my image open?
Supported images include PNG, JPEG, HEIC/HEIF, TIFF, GIF, BMP, WebP, and AVIF when macOS can decode them. The Mac app from v1.4 also opens PDF files through file selection or drag and drop. SVG-only input is not supported. Image limits include 256 MiB of data, 116,640,000 pixels, 32,768 px per side, and an estimated decoded size of about 445 MiB. Resize, split, or export a large image as PNG/JPEG.
What happens to animated GIFs or multi-page TIFFs?
In v1.3+, GIF uses the first frame; TIFF uses the page with the most pixels. Inputs allow up to 100 pages/images, or 10,000 GIF frames. Save and Copy reduce the long side when it exceeds 16,384 px.
Why are Save and Copy unavailable?
In v1.3+, export may pause until the preview reflects your current masks. Your image and masks are kept. Wait a moment; if “Regenerate Preview” is shown, use it and check the result before exporting.
Why does candidate search miss some details?
Candidate search is a review aid in v1.3+. It can miss email addresses, text under 13 pt, non-Retina screenshots, strings split across lines, and IP addresses immediately after Japanese text. Candidates are not masks until accepted. Always review the whole image yourself.
Why doesn’t my shortcut work?
Configure the shortcut in v1.3+ Settings; none is assigned by default. Include Command or Control. It works only while the app is running. If another app uses the same combination, choose a different one.
Does the app upload my images?
The Mac app itself has no network entitlement, and the iPhone app makes no network connections of its own. Image processing and text recognition happen on your device. It collects no personal or usage data. On iPhone, Share hands the image to the app you choose. Apple’s systems handle optional in-app tip purchases.
How do I handle tip billing or refunds?
Apple handles billing and refunds for in-app tips. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com.
Why can’t I open or copy a PDF file?
In the Mac app from v1.4, choose a PDF file with “Open…” or drop it into the editor. Paste, PDFs that require a password to open, PDFs over 256 MiB, and PDFs with 101 pages or more are not supported. Use “Save…” to output a PDF; Copy is unavailable.
Can I search text in a saved PDF?
No. Every page is saved as an image, so text can no longer be searched or selected. Everything visible on the page, including annotations and filled-in form fields, stays in the image, so mask anything you want hidden. The original text data, annotation and form data, bookmarks, attachments, and metadata are not carried over. Review every page before saving.
Does picking a photo on iPhone need photo access?
No. “Choose Photo” (on the first screen, or under Open at the top left) uses the iOS photo picker, and the app receives only the one item you choose. It does not ask for access to your whole photo library. Only the first time you use Save to Photos, it asks for permission to add to Photos.
Why can’t I save to Photos on iPhone?
Saving needs permission to add to Photos. Allow it for this app in the Settings app. A PDF cannot be saved to Photos; use Save to Files or Share.
How do I open and export a PDF file on iPhone?
Choose a PDF file with “Choose File” (on the first screen, or under Open at the top left). Export with “Share” from the Export button at the top right or “Save to Files”: the result is a new PDF with every page as an image, and text can no longer be searched or selected. Copy, Save to Photos, and pasting a PDF are not available. PDFs that require a password, PDFs over 256 MiB, and PDFs with 101 pages or more cannot be opened.
Which format does Share or Save to Files use on iPhone?
For images, Share uses PNG. Save to Files lets you choose PNG, JPEG, HEIC, or TIFF. Save to Photos uses PNG. When a PDF is open, Share and Save to Files both produce a PDF.
